More than ever this Christmas, we have a responsibility to see our gifts not just as a transaction – a discount on cyber Monday, a throwaway last-minute thought – but to shop in a slow, considered way.
That might mean buying gifts locally in your community, paying it forward with a gift voucher for a business you know has had a difficult year, or buying a membership to an organisation that is struggling.
At Shelter, we’ve got plenty of ways you can shop smart and responsibly this year.
1. Get your hands on some Emergency Chocolate
Highlighted by The Observer in their round-up of this year’s best Christmas gifts for food lovers, our organic Emergency Chocolate bars are available in five decadent flavours, including milk, white, and dark, and two vegan options.
As well as being organic, our chocolate range is Fairtrade, produced in the UK and uses compostable packaging. The perfect secret Santa gift, stocking filler or festive treat, each bar is priced at just £5.
2. Give a virtual gift
Looking for something a bit different? Give one of Shelter’s virtual gifts this Christmas. A £10 card could fund a call to Shelter’s emergency helpline and deliver vital support to those who most need it. You could also choose a gift that could furnish a child’s bedroom, or fund a face-to-face chat with a specialist housing adviser.
3. Try our eco-friendly Christmas crackers
This year, for the first time, we’re selling Shelter Christmas crackers. Not only are they made from recyclable packaging, but their fun jokes and party hats will keep you entertained all day long.
4. Bag a designer bargain
Under our new curated collection, Reuse, Restore and Rehome, you can get your hands on some of the most exciting items donated to Shelter shops. Pick up a party dress (Dolce & Gabanna LBD, anyone?) and stand out at the Christmas zoom party. Or treat someone special to a pair of gorgeous Gucci loafers.
5. Grab a last-minute gift
If you’re looking for last-minute gifts closer to the big day, consider sending one of our eCards, or treating someone to our brand new Book Club subscription. Or, for the most important furry friend in your life, there’s always our Big Walk dog bandana.
Plus we still have some Christmas cards available – but get in quick, they’re selling fast!
Buy a gift or product from Shelter this Christmas and don’t underestimate the impact you are having on the millions of people who don’t have a safe, permanent place to call home.
All items are available through our online shop, or in selected Shelter charity shops (if open) in your local area.
