Dave, 52, battles a debilitating spinal condition that has spread to his hips and knees. But it’s not just his health that he’s fighting against: Dave and his son were on the brink of homelessness through no fault of their own, a situation that no one should have to endure, especially during Christmas.
As Dave puts it, ‘getting evicted, you get that sinking feeling. More than anything else, it’s the instability and the not knowing where you’re going to end up.’
The challenge of the housing emergency
Dave’s predicament was further complicated by the glaring gap between the local government housing benefit and the actual local rents. Without a rent guarantor and facing landlords demanding an unattainable six months’ rent upfront, finding a new place to call home seemed like an impossible challenge.
‘I was being asked for six months’ rent upfront,’ Dave recalls. ‘I didn’t have that money, and I didn’t know anyone that could be a guarantor.’
